Benoni C Mitchell (1849 – 1891)
One of my great grandfathers was Benoni C Mitchell.
Benoni was born on 5 June 1849 in Pleasant Twp, Hancock Co, Ohio to parents Robert A Mitchell and Miriam (Butler) Mitchell. He appears in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census living with his parents in Hancock Co. He was the last of 10 children.
On 26 Oct 1871, Benoni married Harriett Sarah Stage in Wood Co, Ohio. Harriet was the daughter of John Stage and Arseneth (Patrick) Stage. Harriet was their third child, born on 15 Nov 1827 in Luzerne Co, Pennsylvania. Benoni and Harriett appeared together in the 1880 census, residing in Jackson Twp, Wood Co, Ohio. Benoni was a farmer and Harriet was listed as his wife. By 1885, they had moved to Hancock Co, somewhere near Carey, Ohio.
Benoni and Harriet were married for only 20 years and had five children, including my grandmother Anna Elizabeth Mitchell on 24 Oct 1889.
Benoni died on 25 Sept 1891 at the age of just 42 years old. He was buried in Union Cemetery, McComb, Ohio.
I have found two possibilities for Benoni’s unique first name. One researcher suggests that Benoni’s uncle (a William Mitchell) married Rachel Culp. Rachel’s father was Benoni Culp. So, Benoni C Mitchell was given this same name with the C standing for Culp. I have found William Mitchell, his wife Rachel Culp and her father Benoni Culp, but so far have been unable to find a link to either Robert or Benoni Mitchell.
The second possible reason for my great grandfather’s name was that he was named after a Benoni Mitchell born 19 Feb 1815 in Lewis Co, Virginia (now West Virginia). He and his wife Susannah Life had 9 children and both died in 1902. Much can be found about this family online including the great family picture below. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a link connecting my Benoni to this family.
If anyone has any information that would help make either of these connections, I would love to hear from you.
