George Washington Tong (1808 – 1879)
My great, great, grandfather was George Washington Tong.
He was born on 12 Dec, 1808 in Lancaster, Fairfield Co, Ohio to William H. Tong and his wife Rebecca (Watson) Tong. As of 1832, he was a canal boat captain. He married Isabel Crawford, also from Fairfield Co, Ohio on 13 Nov, 1834. Soon after they moved to Ridge Twp, Wyandot Co, Ohio where George took a grant of 80 acres. Over the years, he expanded that until he owned approximately a section (640 acres).
George and Isabel had eight children, four boys and four girls. They remained in the same area, just west of Carey for the rest of their lives. During that time, George was a farmer as well as treasurer, clerk, trustee and Justice of the Peace.
George and Isabel ware buried in Zion Bloom Cemetery, St. Paul’s Church, Vanlue, Ohio.
