Fitzpatrick… Or is it Patrick?
My Grandma Tong’s maiden name was Mitchell. Going back another generation, her parents were Benoni C Mitchell and Harriet Sarah Stage. If we go back another generation, Harriet’s parents were John Stage and Arseneth Fitzpatrick.
At least, this is what I thought. Any time I talked to family members, I got the same reply “Arseneth’s last name was Fitzpatrick.”
And every time I tried to find information, I hit a dead-end. Off and on for over 20 years, I tried to find a lead for Arseneth Fitzpatrick (1827 – 1907) and had no luck.
I found plenty of information of her being married to John Stage. The 1850 Census lists Arseneth with John and two of their oldest children in Lyme Twp, Huron Co, Ohio. The 1880 Census also lists them, this time in Weston Twp, Wood Co, Ohio along with one of their son’s, Lorin C. Stage and his wife Bella. Finally, I found where they are buried in Weston Cemetery, Weston, Ohio.
Finally, I had an idea. What if her name was recorded incorrectly, or maybe it had changed, or maybe there was an alternate spelling. That happens all the time, right? So, I started searching alternates. Guess what, I found a Arseneth Patrick, daughter of William Patrick and Olive Wiltsey, that married a John Stage. And with this, there is a whole new Patrick line to research.
